The difficulty with this is that psychological research has helped show that many of the things we think are just "common sense" are actually not true at all, which has helped dispel one of the most pervasive illusions about psychology: that it is just "common sense." For instance, the dangers of smoking cigarettes have become "common knowledge." People yet carry on smoking. Psychology enables us to go beyond common sense and comprehend the causes of human behavior as well as strategies for changing it.
